You can change the functions assigned to the Search button and the side buttons. Some of the functions that you can assign to a short press and long press of these buttons are listed below.

Flick the Start screen to the left, and then in the All apps list, tap [User Button Manager].

For the key you want to change, tap the button below [Short Press] or [Long Press], and then select the desired function.
Default button assignments
The default button assignments are explained below.
Left Side Key
Starts scanning the barcode.
Right Side Key
Starts scanning the barcode.
Right Front Key
Launches Cortana.
Changing the Start button assignment to turn on the screen
By default, you may press (Start button) to turn on the screen.

Flick the Start screen to the left, and then in the All apps list, tap [Settings] → [Extras] → [Key & touch].
2.
Tap the [Wake up with the Start button] switch to turn it on or off.
3.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Changing the Start button assignment to enter one-handed mode
You can press and hold the Start button to slide down the screen (one-handed mode) so that you can operate the unit with one hand. You can change the press and hold time of the Start button to enter one-handed mode.

To exit one-handed mode, tap the black area of the screen.

Flick the Start screen to the left, and then in the All apps list, tap [Settings] → [Extras] → [Key & touch].

Tap the drop-down list under [Time to press and hold the Start button to enter one-handed mode] and then select the desired setting.
Locking the Volume up and down buttons
You can lock the Volume up and down buttons to prevent accidental operation. When the Volume up and down buttons are locked, you cannot adjust the sound volume.

Flick the Start screen to the left, and then in the All apps list, tap [Settings] → [Extras] → [Key & touch].
2.
Tap the [Lock the Volume up/down buttons] switch to turn it on or off.
